Happy Mid-Autumn Festival! Here are 8 ways to celebrate it.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!

Wish you and your family health, happiness, and a wonderful Mid-Autumn Festival. To those who don’t know, Mid-Autumn Festival, Autumn Festival is also known as the “Moon Festival” or the “Mooncake “Festival”. It is a customary Chinese holiday.

It is one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture; its popularity is on par with that of Chinese New Year.

The Mid-Autumn Festival has a 3,000-year history. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the Chinese lunisolar calendar. This corresponds from mid-September to early October in the Gregorian Calendar. The Chinese believe this day marks the Moon’s brightest and fullest size. It happens in the middle of the harvest season in the middle of Autumn.

People carry and display lanterns of many sizes and forms as symbolic beacons that light people’s paths to riches and good fortune. During this event, people generally eat mooncakes, a delicious pastry typically filled with sweet beans, egg yolk, pork, or lotus seed paste. The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the narrative of Chang’e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.

MEANING OF a happy MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL

The festival celebrates three fundamental concepts that are closely connected:

1. Gathering – Getting together with friends and family or harvesting crops for the celebration. On this day, it is stated that the moon is at the roundest and brightest which means “Family Reunion.” This is the main reason why the festival is thought to be important.

2. Thanksgiving – Time to express gratitude for the harvest or successful relationships.

3. Praying – Asking for conceptual or material fulfillment. For example, for children, a spouse, beauty, longevity, or a bright future.

These ideas serve as the foundation for the festival’s myths and traditions. However, these have evolved due to advancements in technology, science, the economy, society, and religion. It’s about coming together as a community.

One of the interesting traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival is hanging lanterns. In Chinese, this activity is known as (shù zhng qi).

It is believed that the family will have more luck if the lanterns are hung higher. Bamboo strips typically fashioned like fruit and birds are used to make the lantern.

Making their homemade traditional lanterns is very popular with kids. When night falls, residents hang lanterns outside with candles inside.

5. Guess Lantern Riddles

In addition to hanging lanterns outside, Chinese folks frequently put exciting riddles on the lanterns. They ask other people to try to guess the answers.

Over 1,500 years have passed since the first lantern riddles started.  Many single men and women in the past used riddles to help them find the right partner.

This activity is still popular among young people naowadays. On Mid-Autumn night and during the Lantern Festival, several Chinatowns or Southeast Asian nations would host lantern riddle competitions (during Chinese New Year).

6. Worship the Moon

The Mid-Autumn Festival is also known as the Moon Festival since many of its customs have Moon Festival.

Chinese people have long believed that the moon controls all important events, especially the production of grain.

Therefore, some people will set up a table outside under the moon on the night of the Moon Festival. Then burn incense, put moon cakes and fruits as sacrifices on the table, face the moon, and pray for fortune.

7. Pray to the Moon

According to Chinese legend, a pair who was destined to fall in love during the Mid-Autumn Festival would have a red thread tied between them by the old man under the moon (yuè lo), a type of Chinese Cupid who is in charge of love and marriage. The elderly man’s red thread will assist the pair to have a successful marriage and live happily ever after.

On the Mid-Autumn Festival night in the past, unmarried boys, girls, and their parents would worship the moon and ask the old man for a happy marriage.

8. Enjoy the Lion and Dragon Dance

Traditional lion dance and dragon dance play an important role in this festival. A long dragon is carried by a group of dancers using poles. The dancers can make the dragon sway and weave by adjusting the poles. On the Mid-Autumn Festival night, lanterns or candles are placed inside the dragon’s body to provide internal illumination.
The fire dragon dance is very popular in Hong Kong.
